Taxi fares are set by the States Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure which announced its plan to put the prices up towards the end of last year, with a brief public consultation so potential passengers could have their say.
That closed on Monday 7 January, and Express has asked how many people commented and what the opinions were.
The last time taxi fares went up was almost exactly a year ago, on 8 January, 2018. E&I said it has done the maths though and the latest increase was necessary.
In a statement last month the committee said:
“The single biggest increase in taxi operating costs over the last twelve months was in respect of fuel charges which rose by 9%. Overall, the increase in taxi operating costs was calculated at 6.06%. The Formula is based 40% on taxi inflation and 60% on average median earnings. With the median earnings figure at just 1.9% at the end of 2017, it means that the overall proposed increase reduces to 3.56%.”
As 3.56% is likely to equal an odd amount of money, fare tariffs will go up in increments of 20p.
This could mean a two mile journey on Tariff One will now cost £6.80, while on Tariff Two it will now cost £9.40. The difference will depend on the time of day or the date you are travelling:
- Tariff One – Normal Hours; i.e. Mon-Fri (07:00 – 22:00) or Sat / Sun (07:00 – 19:00) max of 4 passengers
- Tariff Two – Public Holidays; i.e. Mon – Fri (22:00 – 07:00) or Sat / Sun (19:00 – 07:00) max of 4 passengers
E&I gave the following example fares under the new rates.
- A 2.0 mile journey on Tariff 1* would increase by 20p to £6.80
- A 4.5 mile journey on Tariff 1* would increase by 40p to £11.80
- A 2.0 mile journey on Tariff 2** would increase by 20p to £9.40
- A 4.5 mile journey on Tariff 2** would increase by 40p to £16.40
