La Société Guernesiaise has again increased its landholding of fields in its mission to conserve wildlife – with one nature reserve to expand as a result.

Two fields have been secured at Rue des Vicheries, adding to the reserve known as the Bridget Ozanne Orchid fields.

One has been purchased by the nature charity while another was donated by the children of Mrs Olive Martel. They said they wanted the field protected in her memory.

“The Society extends its sincere gratitude to Geoffrey and Peter Martel for this meaningful contribution, which will help safeguard valuable natural spaces for generations to come,” the charity said.

A third field has been purchased by La Société at Pleinmont, which is hoped to become a habitat for ground-nesting birds.

This includes the Skylark which hasn’t nested locally for years.

But that will only come after an ecological assessment of the site is undertaken.

La Société’s President, Trevor Bourgaize, said the land expansion cemented the organisation’s “ongoing mission to conserve and enhance Guernsey’s biodiversity, ensuring the island’s unique landscapes and wildlife continue to thrive”.
