Tortoise owners are asked to check where theirs are, after three were picked up in different locations across Guernsey this week.
The GSPCA is looking after the trio, who were found relatively near each other on Epinelle Road, Oatlands Lane, and Capelles Road.
None of them are microchipped or have any other identifying marks so the charity is hoping the owners simply may not have noticed that they have wandered off yet.
“Every year, particularly during very warm and sunny weather, it is a regular occurrence for the GSPCA to help lost and escaped tortoises,” explained GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne.
“Tortoises are surprisingly good climbers and escape artists, and the warmer weather often encourages them to become more active and travel further than owners might expect.”
Mr Byrne said the owners should call the animal shelter on 257261 to reclaim their pets. Photographic identification will be required before the reptiles will be handed back.
He added that his team are used to handling tortoises as a surprisingly large number end up in their care every year.
“On average, the GSPCA helps between 20 and 30 stray tortoises each year. Interestingly, the majority tend to be males, particularly during the warmer months when they are often on the move looking for mates.
“We would encourage tortoise owners to regularly check fencing and garden boundaries, especially during hot weather, and to consider microchipping where appropriate.”
