The planned Victor Hugo Centre has already achieved £2 million in pledges and donations, with those behind it saying that is a significant step towards its ultimate goals.

To enable the planned Centre to go ahead, they want to reach £7.5m in funding which will include money from the States of Guernsey which has agreed to put in £1 for every £2 raised privately up to a maximum of £2.5m.

The update was given at a special celebration of the legendary writer’s birthday at Les Cotils last night.

Larry Malcic, the Chair of the Victor Hugo Centre Guernsey LBG, said: “This is a significant milestone towards the creation of the Victor Hugo Centre that demonstrates the generosity of islanders and a recognition of the benefits that the Centre will provide for Guernsey.

“The Centre will celebrate not only Guernsey’s most famous resident, but also the island’s vigorous creative community and talented young people. The theme of the Centre is Guernsey as an island of inspiration – the island inspires many forms of creativity today, just as it inspired Victor Hugo in his time.”

Located in the former States Offices building on the North Esplanade, the proposed centre will feature a performance space, learning hub, and museum dedicated to Victor Hugo’s legacy.

It aims to boost Guernsey’s cultural, educational, and tourism sectors while enhancing the island’s international profile.

In 2025, the Centre will host various events, including Baroness Shami Chakrabarti’s talk on human rights at the upcoming Guernsey Literary Festival, a topic championed by Hugo.

A Victor Hugo Trail is set to launch in the Spring with support from Moore Stephens.

“2025 will see many anniversaries for Hugo and his time in Guernsey,” Mr Malcic continued.

“The Centre looks forward to hosting events and activities in collaboration with local organisations to show off the best of the island”.
