People in Guernsey and Alderney are being asked for their views on proposals to modernise the Bailiwick’s private fostering laws.
The aim is to modernise the current system so that children living away from their immediate families receive the right protection, support, and oversight.
The next stage will be to draft the new law for Health & Social Car to consider.
The proposed changes would ensure that children are recognized as privately fostered until they leave compulsory education or turn 18.
The new law is expected to include: a clear definition of private fostering and the responsibilities of carers, enhanced protection through regular visits, and power to remove children from unsuitable houses.
It is also expected to include creations of criminal offences for failing to meet legal duties.
