A new gastroenterologist has joined the Medical Specialists Group at what it has called a “pivotal moment” with the endoscopy waiting list described as a “major area of focus”.
Dr Asad Khan has joined the MSG’s team of almost 60 consultants.
He will be working to “investigate and treat a wide range of digestive system disorders”.
He adopts a multidisciplinary, shared decision-making approach to ensure patients receive safe, timely, and patient-centred care, said the MSG’s Chair, Dr Michelle Le Cheminant.
The MSG said it has made endoscopy waiting lists a major area of focus since last September.
That has included committing additional resources from its own funds to thoroughly review patient waiting lists, introduce more efficient alternative procedures where clinically appropriate, and ensure that patients are seen on the basis of clinical priority rather than on a first-in, first-out.
As a result, the total number of patients waiting has fallen by 35% compared to September 2025 said Dr Le Cheminant.
“Reducing waiting times for endoscopy has been a key priority for us since last year. Working alongside our colleagues in HSC, we felt it was right to commit some of our own resources to go further and faster in getting patients seen. Making sure that the right patients are seen at the right time, based on clinical need rather than simply on how long they have been on a list. Bringing the waiting list down by 35% since September is a major achievement by our current team and Dr Khan’s appointment will help us build on that progress and continue to meet rising demand with timely, high-quality care for islanders.”
Dr Khan will be working to help bring the waiting list down further, said the MSG.
His specialist interests include diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy — a minimally invasive technique that uses a flexible tube inserted through the mouth to examine and treat conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
Dr Khan also has expertise in luminal gastroenterology, general hepatology, and clinical nutrition, managing conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancers, fatty liver disease, and gallstones.
Originally from Pakistan, Dr Khan completed his Fellowship in general medicine and gastroenterology before moving to the UK in 2010. He built extensive experience within the NHS, working across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
“My own childhood experiences sparked my interest in medicine, and during training I found myself consistently drawn to gastroenterology, especially endoscopy,” he said.
“I was attracted to Guernsey and the MSG not only for the quality of island life, but also because of the consultant-led model of care and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to how services are delivered and improved. This setting allows clinical leadership to translate more directly into real change, in a way that can be harder to achieve within the NHS.”
Alongside his clinical care, Dr Khan is also actively involved in audit, quality improvement projects, teaching, and publications with a focus on improving pathway efficiency, safety, and the overall patient experience.
“I always work hard to employ a thoughtful, problem-solving approach to my practice and ensure patients feel genuinely heard and supported. My aim is to reach the clearest possible diagnosis and management plan, while recognising that, despite the advances, certainty is not always achievable in medicine.”
