The animals were returned to the water at Portlet yesterday (Sunday 18 June).

Geoff George, Head of Marine Mammals, said the pups were recused locally after Christmas last year.

“They both nearly tripled their body weight and were fit to go. The release went very well,” he added.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said: “In the last decade with the two today we have rescued and released 29 grey seal pups back into the wild and the three in our care and keeping us very busy.”

Mr Byrne said the organisation is “extremely busy” rescuing seal pups in its 150th year.

“It was lovely earlier recently to release Shakespeare who was rescued in Jersey in October 2022 and Emilia in Guernsey in December 2022 and both were less than half their body weight and extremely poorly when they arrived.”

The GSPCA continues to have pups in its care which are cash and resource intensive.

“The last three grey seal pups are Peej, Hector and Cleopatra and are all well on the right road and hopefully ready soon.

“With these three seal pups we are going through many fish each day and there are many ways to support their care from donating online to supporting our 150 year celebrations helping seals and other animals in Guernsey.”
