The campaign involves distributing information boards, posters, stickers, and cards across the island, as a physical reminder, with contact details for mental health services like Guernsey Mind, Samaritans, and Healthy Minds, as well as emergency contact details.

This time of year can be difficult, because of the high expectations said Jo Cottell, the Chief Executive of Guernsey Mind.

“Christmas and New Year can be particularly challenging for many,” she said. “Even when surrounded by colleagues and friends at various get-togethers and events, people can still feel isolated and lonely.

“The ‘You Are Not Alone’ campaign aims to reiterate to everyone that support is always available.”

Ms Cottell said that talking is vitally important when people are struggling with their mental health. So it’s also vitally important that others know how to listen and respond.

Free mental health awareness training sessions are still being offered to professionals frequently interacting with the public, such as hairdressers, hospitality staff, and church leaders. These sessions focus on recognising signs of mental health distress and providing appropriate support.

“While the importance of talking is widely recognised, knowing how to respond when someone shares their struggles can be difficult,” Ms Cottell said.

“The training sessions focused on offering guidance on how to talk to someone who reaches out and where to direct them for further help. Feedback has been extremely positive, so we are planning another session in the New Year. Additionally, a short ‘hints and tips’ video is available on our website for all to view.”
