The kiosk was taken over by a new tenant at the start of the year, replacing the old tenants who left following plans from Environment & Infrastructure to tear down a portion of the L’Ancresse sea wall.

When the work on the wall starts, the kiosk will likely come down with that part of the wall.

Zero stars is the worst rating a food establishment can receive during an inspection. An Environmental Health spokesman said the public could view the areas which contributed to it being the only place in Guernsey to have received the score in this set of views.

“A breakdown of the standards that were found in the three areas which contribute to the overall rating can be found by clicking on the premises on our web page,” it said.

“The new website has been designed to give the public more insight into the specific issues affected each food business and to allow them to make informed choices on where they chose to eat or purchase food.”

The website shows for hygiene food handing, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, the kiosk was rated as ‘good’.

Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building – including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control – was given an ‘improvement necessary’ rating.

Finally, management of food safety – systems or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in the future – has been given an ‘urgent improvement necessary’.

More information about exactly how the scores are allocated can be read about here.

However, tenant Sandy Brassell, said a lot of what was mentioned required work to the fabric of the building, and with it earmarked to be destroyed following the sea wall re-alignment project, it did “not make a great deal of sense” to begin investing thousands of pounds to overhaul it. But, she was investing where she can.

“I have had a new water boiler put in, and done some remedial work to make the place secure. My letter [from Environmental Health], says it is a one star, but it is an old building and I am loathed to start work on the floor when they are looking at pulling it down in two months,” she said.

“Who is going to spend a few grand on a new floor? And then I would have to start charging £5 a coffee. Part of this place’s charm is it’s a shack. They also said the floor was dirty – but we are next to the beach and bound to get some sand in over the course of a day.”
