Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel yesterday revealed in the States that an Island-wide speed limit of 20mph near all schools – both primary and secondary – will be in place next year.
The Minister was being quizzed about road traffic issues in and around schools and parks, in the wake of toddler Clinton Pringle’s death in June, when the three-year-old was hit by a van near to the Millennium Town Park and died of his injuries three days later.
While Deputy Noel would not comment directly on Clinton’s case, as there is an on-going police investigation into the incident, he did confirm that 20mph speed limits near Jersey’s schools will soon be coming into force. Currently, only primary schools have the 20mph speed zones in the Island, but that is set to change.
Deputy Louise Doublet asked: “Could we have a timescale on when the 20mph limits on secondary schools will be in place?”
Deputy Noel said: “The 20mph speed limits are designed to come into place hopefully by next year, 2017, so we are committed to that going ahead as soon as possible.”
