A local teacher who has survived cancer four times is making the most of March – by doing one million steps throughout the month to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey.
Chris Fancourt said that Macmillan was a vital part of his recovery and journey – and the charity continues to provide essential support for people living with cancer, and their families.
He is a teacher working part-time for St Lawrence Primary School, and was diagnosed with stage-three colon cancer in February 2025, overcoming a course of chemotherapy, a 12-hour operation, urosepsis and three months of dialysis.
In 1999, he was also diagnosed with a rare form of PNET abdominal cancer and was given a 20 to 30% chance of surviving treatment.
He has become a long-standing fundraiser for cancer charities, with previous endurance feats including taking part in 100 sports in 100 days, marathon running, cycling the length of Italy.

For his latest fundraiser, Chris said he is walking around 15 to 17 miles – or 33,000 steps on average each day.
To “add a little fun” to the challenge, Chris will be wearing a different, fun wig each day.
He said he acquired a selection of wigs from fancy dress outfits when he was younger.
He told Express that he is enjoying the challenge and has discovered lots of new routes and paths and had many friends joining him along the way.

Alongside that, Chris appreciated that the weather has been quite “kind this month”.
For the last day of his challenge, he said he plans to get the children at his primary school involved.
His JustGiving page has raised 82% of his target, which is £3,000. You can support Chris’s cause for Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey here.
