The 66-year-old wife of a cancer patient has become the oldest woman to complete an inter-island solo row – whilst raising funds for charity.

Anne Thomson competed in the annual rowing race from Sark to Jersey last month, becoming the oldest woman to participate in the single’s heat.

Mrs Thomson raised over £1,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey in support of her husband Peter, who is currently undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago.

His wife described the charity’s support as “invaluable”, adding that the staff do “such a wonderful job of supporting islanders on their cancer journey”.

Mrs Thomson said: “My story is not unusual, as there are many of us whose lives are touched and affected by cancer, like my husband Peter.”

Despite only signing up for the race in April, the 66-year-old rower completed the 27km race in three hours, overcoming tough conditions including 30-degree heat and challenging tides.

She explained: “I felt that as he [Peter] was taking on his own personal challenge, I should take on a challenge of my own – one that would put me out of my comfort zone, but also to do something that would benefit others.”

Mrs Thomson said that, throughout the race, “the thought of my husband going through his treatment kept me positive”.

Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey community and engagement lead Andrew Gardham said: “Not only did Anne raise much-needed funds, but she also raised awareness by bravely sharing her own story.

“Her husband Peter is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, and in his honour, she completed an incredible challenge – rowing solo from Sark to Jersey, a tough 27km across open sea with strong tides and currents.

“Her strength and determination are truly inspiring, and we’re so grateful for everything she’s done for Macmillan Jersey.”
