John Wavell, who admitted the sexual abuse charges and a count of grave and criminal assault, was sentenced by the Royal Court on Monday.
The States of Jersey Police has issued a statement praising the victim in the case for coming forward and telling about their abuse decades ago.
A spokesperson for the police said that they were always there to listen to victims who wanted to speak about what had happened to them – and emphasised that they would be fully supported right through the criminal and court process.
The spokesman said: “The States of Jersey Police have the utmost determination to investigate and prosecute child sexual abuse, historic or current.
“We want to assure victims that there is help available from a number of agencies who are in a position to offer support and guidance through all stages of the criminal justice process.”
In the case of Wavell, the police and partner agencies provided specialised support for the victim.
The police say that the sentence handed down to Wavell reflected the seriousness with which the Royal Court took cases of child abuse.
