An exhibition which uses vibrant colours and patterns to explore an artist’s experience of sight-saving surgeries is due to open at the Harbour Gallery today.

Every week, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here’s this week’s offering…

A celebration of sight

The Harbour Gallery Jersey is opening its latest exhibition this weekend which aims to celebrate the importance of sight.

Studio artist Maureen Osborne will showcase her beautiful oil paintings at the St Helier gallery from Friday 21 March.

Her artwork uses vibrant colours and patterns to explore Maureen’s experience of sight-saving surgeries – and highlight her belief that sight shouldn’t be taken for granted.

‘In Focus: A celebration of sight’ can be visited everyday from 09:30 to 17:30 until 30 April.

Paper worlds

Local schoolchildren and their families are being invited to take part in a selection of free workshops exploring the world of paper art this weekend.

ArtHouse Jersey’s ‘Paper Worlds’ exhibition will celebrate the paper artwork of hundreds of local schoolchildren.

To go alongside the main exhibition, the arts charity has organised a series of sessions on collaging, making paper doves, sensory drawing and weaving.

The interactive activities will take place over the next two weekends at Capital House.

The art made in the workshops will not be used in the final display, but paper art made in schools will be displayed at Capital House from Tuesday 25 to Sunday 30 March.

Spring flowers

Spring has officially sprung!

A gorgeous array of spring flowers, cacti and succulents will be on display at the Royal Jersey Showground this Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March.

Members of the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society will be showcasing their hardwork from 11:00 until 17:00 on both days.

Flower arranging sessions, children’s classes and crafty stalls will also be featured.

A charity cake auction will take place at 15:30 each day in aid of Brightly children’s charity, which supports those in the Children’s Service.

Crafty Ouens

Beautiful handmade gifts made by local crafters will be on sale at St Ouen’s Parish Hall on Saturday 22 March.

The Crafty Ouens market will feature an array of products from crochet to greeting cards, cushions and jewellery.

From 09:00 until 16:00, visitors will be able to purchase fresh veg and Jersey Wonders at the market, and raise money for the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group at a fundraising games stand.

A night at the opera

Opera fans are in for a treat next week thanks to a charity performance created by the Jersey Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Jersey Cheshire Home.

‘An Evening of Opera Choruses’ will see local singers – including residents and staff from the adult disability centre – take to a dedicated stage at Jersey Cheshire Home over three nights from Tuesday 25 to Thursday 27 March.

Guests will be welcomed with bubbles and canapés at 19:00, before enjoying a selection of inspiring opera choruses.

All proceeds from the event will go to continuing the charity’s work supporting islanders with disabilities.
