Films celebrating Polish cinema and filmmakers are being screened at the Jersey Arts Centre this weekend as part of an annual film festival.

Every week, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here’s this week’s offering…

Polish cinema

Various films made by Polish creatives are being screened on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June as the annual Polish Film Festival continues at the Jersey Arts Centre.

Under the Grey Sky, directed by Mara Tamkovich and released last year, follows anti-regime journalist Lena after she was arrested for videoing the crackdown of a demonstration protesting the 2020 Belarusian election.

The film screening starts at 20:00 on Friday 6 June, tickets for which can be purchased here.

That is followed by a screening of a dramatised biography of pioneering Polish scientist Simona Kossak, who leaves everything behind for her work and settles in a forest.

The screening begins at 20:00 on Saturday 7 June. Tickets can be purchased here.

The Witches

Islanders can head to La Hougue Bie this weekend for a witchy performance inspired by Jersey’s past.

Ballet D’Jerri will present a new dance production that combines the myth, ritual and history of the island’s infamous witch trials in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.

Performances will take place each evening from Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 June.

More information and tickets can be found here.

Last chance

Islanders have one last chance to see ArtHouse Jersey’s Lib80-inspired exhibition of ‘Structures & Memory (A Place Called Wurzach)’ this weekend.

The installation at Capital House runs until this Sunday 8 June and has been inspired by archived material detailing the experiences of 618 Jersey deportees that were sent to a prison camp in Germany during the Occupation.

Four local artists – Emily de Gruchy, Shan O’Donnell, Oliver Le Gresley and Nicole Sheppard – have made various pieces varying from sculptures, photographs, soundscapes and interviews.

The show also features two ‘satellite’ texts from Nuril Basri, an Indonesian novelist and the Iranian playwright and theatre-maker Azade Shahmiri.

The exhibition is free to view from 12:00 to 18:00 every day.

Bloom

A three-month-long art installation begins at Jersey Zoo this Friday 6 June to continue its celebrations for the would-be 100th birthday of its founder Gerald Durrell.

Bloom, inspired by Durrell’s story and passion, is a colourful meadow of thousands of flower sculptures, celebrating the past 100 years and looking ahead to the next.

Running until 30 September, it is located in the courtyard of Les Augres Manor – Durrell’s former home – and is free upon regular zoo admission prices.

Visitors can join the installation by buying a flower on the zoo’s website.

Ladies of the House

A highly-anticipated DJ fundraiser celebrating female music makers is set to take place at the Watersplash on Saturday 7 June.

‘Ladies of the House’ will see various DJs provide the beats throughout the day from 13:00 to 02:00 in aid of domestic abuse charity, Freeda and Jersey Action Against Rape.

Professional DJs Lisa Loud and DJ Lora will headline the event – which has an 83% female line-up – and are hoping for people to dance the night away for charity.

Music will start on the terrace before moving indoors at 21:00. Tickets can be booked here.
