Beach water quality is now “excellent” across the island after four bays were found to have “unacceptable levels of bacteria” after a period of heavy rainfall.

Water quality testing on 18 and 19 May rated four bays – Plémont, Long Beach, Havre des Pas and Victoria Pool – as “poor”.

It sparked concern on social media as islanders headed to the shores to cool off during the recent sweltering heatwave.

But updated testing found the water quality at all beaches was “excellent”.

A statement from the Infrastructure and Environment Department said: “Following last week’s results, which included a small number of poorer samples attributed to heavy rainfall, routine testing was carried out again.

“All bathing waters across the island were classified as ‘excellent’ in the latest sampling round.

“Results can be accessed via the QR codes displayed on bathing water signs at each beach or by visiting the seawater monitoring section of the website: Seawater monitoring.”
