A Jersey arts charity that helps people recover from trauma is preparing for its first international outreach project… and is inviting Islanders to swap burgers for boerie rolls in a South African-style braai event to raise money for it.
Taking place on Saturday 11 July at the Savanna Social Club in St Brelade, the event will bring together food, live music and South African culture.
Good food…
Guests attending the evening will be treated to traditional South African cuisine, including boerie rolls – a popular sausage served with tomato relish.
In return for their £30 ticket, attendees will also receive a dessert and a welcome drink.
But the meaning of the fundraiser is about more than just food.
…and a good cause
The Kairos Arts team plan to travel to the Valley community in George, South Africa, where it will work alongside local organisations supporting people affected by poverty, trauma, exploitation and trafficking.
The charity says the trip will focus on rest, restoration and renewal, with therapeutic arts sessions planned for women and frontline staff working in vulnerable communities.
Pam Witthoft, Therapeutic Director at Kairos Arts and a fellow South African, described the project as “deeply personal”.
“It is an opportunity to take the therapeutic arts beyond our own community and share them with people who are often overlooked or facing significant hardship,” she added.
She added that the aim was not only to support vulnerable women but also to provide frontline workers with practical tools and space to recharge.
“It is through this shared learning and empowerment that we hope to create a lasting impact,” she said.

The fundraiser runs from 6pm to 10.30pm on 11 July. Tickets cost £30 and all proceeds will go towards the South Africa outreach project and can be bought here.
