The independent body that oversees the States of Jersey Police and makes sure they are doing a good job is on the hunt for a team of volunteer Independent Custody Officers to make some unannounced visits.

Jason Lane of the JPA said: “Independent custody visiting is a well-established system whereby unannounced visits are made to the police station day or night to check on the treatment of detainees and the conditions in which they are held to ensure that their rights and entitlements are being upheld in accordance with the law.

“As an independent body formed to oversee the performance of States of Jersey Police, the JPA has taken over the administration of the scheme in the last year and require more volunteers to enable us to increase on the number of visits we carry out each year.

“We offer full training and support for this unique voluntary role which can be very rewarding for anyone who is looking for an opportunity to work within our community and in some way give back some of their time. We are looking for a mix of adults from multi-cultural backgrounds and will run a thorough interview process.”

The voluntary job is for Islanders over 18 and if you want to find out more, give the JPA a call on 753916 or email enquiries@jerseypoliceauthority.je.
