This week’s Charity Chomp was provided by Caring Cooks, who provide nutritious food to families across the island as well as hot meals and cooking education in schools.
These scones are often made by pupils in Year 6 with excellent – and delicious! – results!
“Scones, whether plain or flavoured, are just one of many baked goods that consistently have a high ratio of fats and carbohydrates,” the team at Caring Cooks explained.
“These two macronutrients are obviously necessary for health but need to be eaten in moderation. Unfortunately, for most shop-bought scones, those fats are either saturated or trans fats. Remember, like this recipe, you can adapt and reduce the amount of fat and sugar used to make it a healthier option.”
Scones
(makes six)
(ALLERGY INFORMATION: Contains gluten, dairy and eggs)
Ingredients
-
150g self-raising flour
-
25g caster sugar
-
33g salted Jersey butter
-
Pinch of baking powder
-
1 medium free-range egg
-
3 tbsp milk
Equipment
- Weighing scales
- Knife
- Mixing bowl
- Small plastic container
- Rolling pin (optional)
- Small cutter
- Spoon measures
- Pastry brush
- Measuring spoons
- Baking tray
- Cooling rack
Method
-
Heat the oven to 220℃, fan 200℃, gas mark 7.
-
Line the baking tray with greaseproof paper.
-
Measure the dry ingredients into the mixing bowl.
-
Weigh the butter, cut into small cubes and add to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips, rub the fat into the flour until it resembles fine crumbs.
-
Crack the egg into the small container then add the milk. Whisk with the fork to combine.
-
Form a well in the centre of the flour mixture then carefully pour in the egg and milk. Combine all the ingredients together to form a dough (take care not to over mix).
-
Place the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough to 1½ – 2cm thickness. Use the cutter to portion. Repeat the process until all the dough is used.
-
Place the scones onto the lined baking tray. Gently brush the tops with a little egg-wash or milk.
-
Bake in the oven for 9-11 minutes.
-
Remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving.
