In the annual message, Senator Ian Gorst wrote that the war in Syria and the refugee crisis “is one of the biggest challenges facing Europe”.
Senator Gorst’s plans to offer shelter to some Syrian refugee families here in Jersey had to be shelved when lawyers said it would create a precedent that could create open access to any number of refugees from any other country.
He said: “This issue is one of the biggest challenges facing Europe and we all want to see a long-term solution.
“We will be increasing our donations through the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission.
“We have already given £1 million in aid to Syrian refugees and will be allocating more in 2016.”
