Milly’s owner called the fire service at around 5.25 pm last night, saying that while out for a walk, the young hound had tumbled 40-feet down a cliff.
Firefighters from Green Watch equipped with special line rescue gear were dispatched, and when they got there they quickly found the owner.
They used steel stakes to secure a rope before lowering Firefighter Birrell down to rescue the stranded Milly and hand her back to her owner, unharmed by her ordeal.
Watch Commander Richard Ryan said that the owner had done exactly the right thing – and urged Islanders never to try to rescue dogs from cliffs on their own.
He said: “Please keep dogs on leads near cliff edges and never try and rescue a dog should it go over the cliff – call 999 and ask for The Fire Service.
“The worst situation is when the owner tries to rescue the pet and come to grief themselves.”
