Two fire engines and a drone were called out to St Aubin on Saturday afternoon to rescue a dog that had fallen down a cliff.

Two-year-old Norfolk terrier Bracken was playing with his brother Otto, when a rabbit emerged from the bushes.

The terriers chased after the rabbit, with Bracken following it off the edge of the cliff.

Cat Byers, who looks after the dogs daily for a friend, said that she could hear the pup but could not see him due to the loose shale and undergrowth on the way down.

She was concerned because of the busy main road nearby and was unable to risk going down the cliff herself.

Cat praised the fire service for arriving within five minutes of being called, with one engine coming from town and the other from an exercise out west.

Firefighters sealed off the area and used a drone to locate Bracken, who was stuck in the garden of a property below.

The property had two German Shepherd dogs who, luckily for little Bracken, were inside the house.

The drone guided rescuers to the dog from below, and he was found completely unharmed – despite losing his harness on the way down the cliff.

Bracken was checked over by a vet and was back to his usual playful self shortly after the incident.

Cat told Express how grateful she was for the fire service’s swift and professional response.

“They were so brilliant. They were so professional. They were there to help, and they were wonderful,” she said.

“The family and I just can’t thank them enough from the bottom of our hearts. It was done and dusted within about 45 minutes. They were so kind and we are so grateful.”

Cat added that it is important for islanders to know the fire service is there to help with a multitude of incidents – not just fires.
