The man was said to have fallen into a bush in the early hours of Wednesday morning and landed on a reinforced steel bar that is believed to have been used as a plant support.
He was unable to get up due to the injury to his eye and was quickly rescued by paramedics and firefighters.
Emergency personnel used hand tools and hydraulic cutting equipment to release the spike from the ground, and shorten the metal bar, which was approximately two foot long. They then worked together on scene to stabilise the casualty before he could be transported to hospital.
Richard Ryan, Watch Commander, said: “This was an excellent example of how paramedics and firefighters work together at emergency incidents to ensure that the best care possible is given to the people in need.
“Credit should also be given to the gentleman’s son who was in attendance, and remained calm and helpful throughout this traumatic event.”
