Islanders have been urged to take extra care with disposable barbecues after firefighters were called to two bin fires in as many evenings.

In a social media post shared during the recent spell of warm weather, Jersey Fire & Rescue Service reminded people to ensure used BBQs are fully cooled and “doused in water before placing in a bin”.

“As we are all enjoying the warm BBQ weather, just a reminder about the safe disposal of disposable BBQs,” the service said.

The warning comes days after Jersey Met issued a Level 4 Fire Severity warning because of “very dry land and lack of rain”, creating what firefighters described as “a high risk of fire”.

Jersey Fire & Rescue said: “The ground is extremely dry and one spark is all it takes.”

The service urged people not to light fires unnecessarily and to dispose of glass safely, warning it “can easily start a wildfire”.

Islanders planning to barbecue were told to “use it responsibly” and avoid disposable BBQ-related fires, while beachgoers were also reminded not to enter the sea alone because “the water is still very cold and cold water shock remains a risk”.

A fire safety graphic shared alongside the warning advised people to never leave a BBQ unattended, keep a bucket of water nearby and “only dispose of BBQs and ash when cold”.
