Funktion Fitness currently operates from small premises on Gloucester Street but wants to expand its services to offer “holistic healthcare under one roof.”

As a result of covid-19, the studio began offering online and outdoor group training classes, including a weekend session at Durrell for the ‘Love your zoo’ campaign.

Nick Dingle, a director and personal trainer at Function Fitness said: “The pandemic meant that we had to diversify our business model and during the lockdown period we moved our personal training sessions and started holding group classes online.

“Those clients now want to continue training with us in the gyn, so we need more room.”

The new premises at Elizabeth House 9 on Castle Street would allow the fitness business to move their group sessions indoors.

The proposed design includes a large studio, changing rooms and showers, a reception room area and two consulting rooms for health and well-being practitioners such as sports massage therapists, chiropractors or nutritionists.

The site is below and adjacent to working offices but Funktion Fitness says the new studio is an appropriate business for the space.

In the planning statement, the business says: “The more central location will make us more accessible and visible to all, and far better placed to promote health and wellbeing to islanders, local businesses and clubs.”

They add: “We have no intention to change our model from a tailored and supervised client specific service to become a high-football membership gym.”

Unlike traditional gyms, Funktion Fitness say they would not face issues of noise and vibrations that arise from having running machines and heavy equipment, and say that playing loud music runs contrary to their philosophy.

The gym’s proposed opening hours are 06:00–22:00 Monday to Friday, and 07:00–19:00 on Saturday and Sunday.
