Jersey Festival Choir is holding a special performance next month to mark its 70th anniversary.

The choir is performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah at St Helier Methodist Centre on Saturday 2 May from 7.30pm.

Jersey-born professional conductor James Southall will lead the choir, with several professional soloists joining from the UK.

Jersey Festival Choir was founded in the mid-1950s by John Lobb after a formative choral course in Dorset.

The group grew from a plan to bring large-scale performances to local audiences – a vision realised in 1956 with a show that sparked the creation of a new independent ensemble.

Shaped by generations of dedicated musicians, the choir has become a mainstay of the island’s cultural life.

A tradition of distinguished guest conductors, alongside a strong thread of family involvement, has helped sustain its reputation for staging some of the most ambitious works in the choral repertoire.

Now under the direction of musical director William Millow, the choir continues to build on that legacy.

Tickets for the upcoming anniversary performance can be purchased online.
