A new community garden has opened in the north of St Helier following concerns raised during the pandemic about the lack of accessible green space in the “neglected” area.

Lieutenant-Governor Vice Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd joined the  St Helier Community Trust last week to open the new patch of green space.

The site, sitting next to the former La Pouquelaye School off Fairfield Avenue, was acquired by the St Helier Community Trust in 2022.

St Helier Community Trust chair Andrew Lewis described the new space as more than just “the opening of a new garden”, but the “unveiling of a sanctuary for the north of St Helier”.

The garden has been designed to be as accessible as possible for all ages and abilities, including individuals with mobility issues and those facing health or social challenges.

The space is within walking distance of a densely populated area.

Centrepoint and the Jersey Youth Service will use the site for activities including forest school sessions, raised allotments and a purpose-built sensory garden.

Mr Lewis added: “It represents a transition from isolation to connection, turning what was once a landlocked target for fly-tipping into a flourishing oasis that reflects the very best of Jersey’s enduring community spirit.”
