This week saw a colourful convoy of VW campervans winding through the streets of Jersey to deliver 18-year-old Zac to his prom night at Mont à L’Abbé school.
St Clement resident Samantha Jones arranged the convoy to give her son, who has been “obsessed” with VW campervans for as long as she can remember, the most memorable end-of-school celebration she could imagine.
“It was amazing, everyone has been so amazing – I couldn’t have asked for it to be any better, everyone was just lost for words,” she told Express.
“Zac was saying in the bus on the way to prom: Mum, I will never, ever, ever forget this – this is in my memory forever, which is so heartwarming.”
Samantha was delighted to report that a total of seven buses arrived to transport Zac, who elected to ride to the prom in a classic blue and white VW campervan.
“His favourite colour is blue, so it was inevitable it would be the blue one,” she laughed.
Speaking over the phone, she described the evening as “really quite emotional”.
“Everyone was cheering, the staff were crying, the other parents were crying and Zac was absolutely buzzing.
“The lovely driver actually played Zac’s favourite rave music on the way there, so it was like a combination of Zac’s two favourite things all at once.”
The mother-of-three said that the evening reaffirmed her faith in the Jersey community.
“For people to give up their time in the way they did to lend their vehicles was so heartwarming,” she enthused.
“It really puts the community back in Jersey, I feel that the Island has lost its way a bit in the last few years, but when things like this happen, this is the Jersey we know and love.
“When everyone comes together, when the community comes together, and they give their time and effort up – even washing the cars the day before and preparing them on the day – I’m just so grateful.”
