Staff from the States of Jersey Fisheries and Marine Resources recovered the recreational fishing net yesterday morning.
They said it was in “poor condition” but still attached to a buoy.
In a post shared to their Facebook page, the Fisheries added: “It contained over 20 dead and dying spider crabs and would have continued to ghost fish had it not been found and removed by officers while conducting routine gear checks at sea.”
Ghost fishing occurs when derelict fishing gear continues to catch fish, crustaceans and other marine animals.
The Fisheries reminded anyone fishing in the island that any fishing gear set in the sea should be “responsibly managed”.
