Celebrated psaligraphy artists – Professor Xiaoguang Qiao from China and Karen Bit Vejle from Norway – will be here in October to exhibit their new work for the first time in Great Britain and to get Islanders creating their own paper cut work of art.

‘Paper Dialogues’ is a paper collaboration between the two artists from opposite sides of the world. The two embarked on the venture, making a ‘dragon’ that represented their own cultures – Professor Qiao making a nine metre long traditional Chinese dragon and Bit cutting seven dragon eggs, telling stories of the past, present and future. It’s already been exhibited to great critical acclaim in Beijing, Shanghai and Norway and will soon be housed in a specially built gallery space within the Town Hall’s Assembly Rooms. The paper cuts will be encased in glass with lights shining through them, casting shadows on the walls and floors.

Jersey Arts Trust are now on the hunt for six artists to help take part in an intensive workshop with Qiao and Bit, and will be paid to create their own paper-cut pieces of work.

They will work on sharing their new skills with schoolchildren across the Island and help get Islanders involved in making their own paper cut art for a ‘Paper Talks’ exhibition next year.

Professor Xiaoguang Qiao and Karen Bit Vejle will help start a big paper ‘Jersey Dragon’ – a piece of art that will become a permanent mascot for the project.

If you want to take part you need to be free from 10 to 17 October and have time from October until February to help run the workshops in schools.
