Holland & Barrett is seeking permission to refurbish and occupy the former premises of Clintons Cards.

A planning application submitted by the health food company outlines proposals for an internal refurbishment and the installation of new signage at 44 King Street.

The Grade 4 listed building has been vacant since Clintons Cards closed its doors.

According to the Heritage Impact Statement submitted with the application, Holland & Barrett plans to retain and repair the building’s existing timber shopfront, which will be repainted in the company’s signature green colour.

Internally, the shop will be completely refitted with new displays, counters and lighting, while keeping structural elements such as stairs and walls untouched.

The upper floors will be left as existing unless repair works are required, according to the plans.

The application points to the Bridging Island Plan, which recommends prioritising retail on the island.

“The retail unit is currently empty and the proposals aim to help with ‘enhancing retail vitality’ as promoted in the plan,” it continued.

“In its prime location the Holland & Barrett unit will be a busy hub for the community appealing to shoppers of all ages and demographics.”

The full planning application can be found online.
