A 70-year-old cyclist died after being hit by a car when its driver lost control during a medical incident, an inquest has concluded.
Gaynor Bidel died in hospital following a collision near the Iceland store on Rue à Don on the morning of 5 June 2023. The car’s driver was also taken to hospital at the time.
An inquest – the purpose of which is to formally establish the circumstances through which someone died – was subsequently opened into her death, but adjourned pending a full investigation.
More than two years later, on 1 October, the inquest was resumed.
Having heard medical evidence, Advocate Whelan concluded that the driver of the car – a man in his 70s – was likely to have suffered a fainting event as a result of a cardiac condition.
He therefore lost control of the car, resulting in the impact which knocked Mrs Bidel from her bike and led her to suffer multiple injuries.
