The cause of an incident involving DFDS’s fast ferry Tarifa Jet is to be investigated after it “made contact” with the Elizabeth east berth earlier this evening.

Inspections are currently taking place to determine the extent of any damage to both the vessel and harbour infrastructure.

A Ports of Jersey spokesperson said that no injuries have been reported following the incident, which resulted in the Danish shipping firm cancelling its 6.55pm sailing to St Malo.

“An investigation will take place with the operator and the vessel’s flag state to understand the cause of the incident,” the spokesperson added.

In a statement, DFDS said: “During Sunday evening’s arrival into St Helier harbour, Tarifa Jet made contact with the ferry berth, resulting in some damage to the stern.

“No passengers or crew were injured in the incident.”

The statement continued: “As a result, Sunday evening’s sailing to St Malo has been cancelled and we apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused.

“DFDS officials are working with port authorities and carrying out an inspection of the vessel.”

It added that a further update will be provided tomorrow morning.

Some islanders took to the DFDS Channel Island users’ group on Facebook to discuss the incident.

“Me and a mate were watching it come in, looked away for a second and just heard a massive bang,” one commented, adding: “Didn’t realise the damage was as bad as this though!”

Another said: “I hope they have another ship ready on standby!”

One commented: “I don’t really care who is responsible, I just want to know what the contingency plans are for people about to travel.”
