A Jersey teenager is set to sail from Scotland to Norway this summer thanks to a bursary aimed at islanders with big nautical dreams.

Dinghy sailing instructor Jamie Le Marquand hopes his adventure will inspire the younger sailors he coaches.

The 17-year-old’s participation in the Tall Ships Race will be funded by the £1,000 Jersey Clipper Bursary.

The race sees young sailers voyage from Le Havre to Denmark, via Dunkirk, Scotland and Norway on historic ships.

“I’m determined to make the most of this amazing opportunity,” he said.

“After the race I’ll return to teach sailing in Jersey as an RYA Dinghy Instructor at the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club.”

Jamie added: “For the past two summers I’ve enjoyed sharing my passion with younger sailors and I hope they not only see the fun I had, but are inspired by my experience to find their own adventures.”

The Jersey Clipper Bursary’s second prize of £500 went to a crew from the island’s three sailing clubs.

They will travel to the UK to take part in a keelboat regatta to develop their skills, inspire younger sailors, and strengthen Jersey’s presence in national keelboat racing.
