Marks and Spencer’s Food Halls are currently the cheapest place to do your grocery shopping in Guernsey.

Based on an independent price check comparison carried out on Wednesday 21 May, a number of staple items add up to a cheaper basket there when compared to other retailers.

Previously, M&S was named the cheapest earlier this year before Morrisons took the crown for the next couple of comparisons. They’ve now switched places.

Volunteers behind the ‘Supersavvysavers’ brand visited each of the big name supermarkets across Guernsey to compare prices.

The three Food Halls at L’islet, St Martins, and the town quay, are all franchises of Creaseys. Others visited included Morrisons, Waitrose, the CI Coop, and Alliance.

The same basket of goods is priced up at each shop. It includes staple items like bread, milk, butter, flour, ketchup, and baked beans.

The basket itself changed this month, for the first time, based on feedback with toilet roll and washing up liquid added to the comparison. Orange juice and potatoes were removed from the list.

Using the same shopping list at each shop, cost £33.38 at M&S, £33.79 at Morrisons, £34.08 at Waitrose, £34.72 at the CI Coop, and £37.02 at Alliance.

The price comparison was carried out by the women behind Supersavvysavers and is entirely independent of M&S and any other retailer in the island.

Kat Gillespie and Sarah de Carteret launched their website last year, and have run monthly supermarket comparisons since July.

Since then, the island’s different retailers have vied for the title of ‘cheapest’ in Guernsey based on the sample basket of goods.
