Islanders interested in making a difference overseas will have the chance to find out more about Jersey Overseas Aid’s 2027 Volunteer Programme at a free event tomorrow.
The programme will be officially launched at the Royal Yacht Hotel on Wednesday 30 September, with the event beginning at 6pm.
Jersey Overseas Aid is inviting Islanders to learn more about how they can contribute to sustainable development overseas through ethical and locally led volunteering.
The evening will provide an introduction to the opportunities available in 2027, as well as an insight into what it is really like to volunteer overseas.
Former volunteers and members of the JOA team will share their experiences, including the challenges and rewards of working alongside communities overseas, as well as the personal and professional development opportunities that volunteering can bring.
JOA’s volunteer programme is based on long-term partnerships with organisations that understand the priorities of local communities. Volunteers therefore work on projects addressing needs identified by those communities, rather than imposing outside solutions.
For more than 50 years, Jersey volunteers have supported locally led projects in countries including Malawi, Kenya, Nepal and Zambia, helping to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term development.
The programme is guided by the Global Volunteering Standard, which aims to ensure that overseas volunteering is ethical, responsible and delivers sustainable benefits for both communities and volunteers.
International Development Minister Carolyn Labey, who is also chair of JOA, said volunteering could help build “global understanding and solidarity.”
“Jersey volunteers work alongside communities overseas, learning from others and contributing to locally led development,” she said.
“It is an experience that not only supports communities around the world but also brings valuable skills, perspectives and experiences back to Jersey.”
JOA said it was looking for people with enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to learn. Previous volunteering experience is not required.
Many former volunteers return to Jersey with new perspectives and a stronger understanding of global issues, while the Island can also benefit from the knowledge and connections they bring back.
Applications for the 2027 Volunteer Programme will open after the launch event.
Applicants must be aged 18 or over and have lived in Jersey for at least five years.
The launch event will be held at the Royal Yacht Hotel from 6pm on Wednesday 30 September. Attendance is free, but places must be reserved in advance through Eventbrite.
