Jersey College for Girls has been described as “outward-looking and forward-thinking” in a newly released independent review following a three-day visit by independent inspectors last month.

During the review, which formed part of the Jersey Schools Review Framework, the inspectors observed and evaluated the curriculum, teaching and learning.

The team visited assemblies, tutor time and house meetings, as well as observing pupils at the start of the day, at breaks and lunchtimes, and as they moved around school.

Reviewers also met a range of pupils holding leadership roles, and the views of the
staff, pupils and parents were gathered through surveys conducted explicitly for this review.

Following the inspection, the report concluded that “teaching is mostly high quality, underpinned by well-planned subject curriculums which together enable typically very strong academic standards”.

It continued: “Nevertheless, leaders never lose sight of whether, whatever their starting point, pupils are achieving their full potential.

“The mantra ‘believe you can’ and the interwoven values of ‘aspire, inquire, excel, belong’ are at the heart of everything the school does and its many successes.”

JCG received praise for its “unwavering commitment at all levels to ‘holistic student development, fostering academic excellence, emotional resilience and social growth’ is pupils’ everyday lived experience”.

The report said: “Pupils leave with the attitudes, attributes and aspirations they need for future success and an extremely strong sense of social responsibility and justice.”

The review also noted the school nurtured “a sense of belonging for pupils” and its
“wide range of high-quality opportunities for developing pupils’ leadership skills”.

The independent inspectors recommended that JCG should “share its learning and expertise” with other schools in Jersey.

JCG has just over 780 students aged between 11 and 18.
