A Jersey College for Girls student made a speech about Jersey’s economic growth and the need to diversify the island’s labour market in the House of Commons last week.

Year 12 student Cassie Graham represented the island at this year’s UK Youth Parliament on Friday 1 March.

A former member of the Jersey Youth Parliament, Cassie is one of 260 young people aged between 11 and 18 who attended the fifteenth iteration of the annual debate.

The UK Youth Parliament held its debut sitting in the House of Commons in 2009, making history as the first time that the Chamber had been used by anyone other than elected Members of Parliament.

Cassie was invited to take part by Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, alongside representatives from other Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories.

The A level student is already making a name for herself in youth politics, having attended the British and Irish Council conference held in Jersey in 2023, as well as that year’s Youth Conference in London.

Cassie also attended the Normandy Peace Forum last September in Caen.

Ahead of the session, Sir Lindsay said he was “very proud” that this year’s UK Youth Parliament will hear from such a “broad range of young voices”.

He said: “I cannot wait to hear the thoughts and views of young people from across the UK, the British Overseas Territories, and the Crown Dependencies on the issues that matter to them.”
