A Jersey-born student nurse has been recognised by the world’s largest nursing union.

Mary Bichard, who is studying for a master’s degree in adult and child nursing at the University of Southampton, was named as ‘Student Ambassador of the Year’ by the Royal College of Nursing.

The award honours ambassadors who have made a difference at their university and shown outstanding commitment to the union and its members.

Mary said: “I am very grateful and surprised by the award from the College for the work I have been able to do over the last three years.

“Most of all, I want to say thank you to all the RCN staff and members who have supported me in the work I have engaged in.

“I hope what I have done has made life a little easier for nursing and allied health professional students who work so hard to become confident practitioners.”

Royal College of Nursing regional director Ellen McNicholas said: “My heartfelt congratulations to Mary on receiving this award.

“Colleagues who nominated her said that Mary is one of the reasons that the South East has a strong student voice as she encourages others to get involved in the RCN.

“At university she has consistently held a role on the nursing society committee and has welcomed new students into the society.”

Mary was presented with her award at a ceremony in London.
