BoxInBusiness coach Ben Murray insists it will be a special event on this occasion for two reasons – the return of former world champion Anthony Crolla as guest of honour and a four-man mini-tournament called ‘The Real Contender.’
Over 500 fighters, family and friends attended yesterday weigh-in at the Royal Yacht Hotel and Mr Murray can’t wait for the action to start.
He said: “Anthony Crolla made such a huge impression last time he came in May that we wanted to ask him back. We were delighted when he said yes. It is a real honour having him at the show as he is such a credit to the sport of boxing.
“He lost his world title a few weeks ago on a close points decision but there is talk of a re-match with Jose Linares and we are all hoping he comes out on top if that happens. Anthony is the perfect example for anyone to follow as he is so professional and so enthusiastic. It was a pleasure having here last time and we are thrilled he has decided to come back.”
Crolla, who boxed against Mr Murray in 2005 in the Amateur Boxing Association finals, said he was delighted to be asked to attend as guest of honour tonight. “It took me no time at all to say yes and if this show is anything like the last one we are all in for a memorable night. I was so impressed by the dedication of everyone involved and I know I’m going to enjoy it just as much as last time.”
Mr Murray says tonight’s event has added spice as there will be 16 fighters competing in eight bouts, but another four boxers will face each other in two semi-finals, then a final to decide who is the ‘Real Contender.’
Mr Murray said: “The concept is pretty much like ‘Prizefighter’ and it is a tournament within a tournament. It should make for a cracking evening as this will be competitive boxing, but without losing the element of fun which is so important. Also, there will be a lot of money raised for charity which is the most important aspect of the whole night.”
The event has sold out with all 650 seats taken and Mr Murray said the determination of all the boxers has been a feature of tonight’s show.
“I’ve been amazed as the effort involved has been incredible. I know how much the fighters are looking forward to it. It promises to be an incredible evening.”
