A local cardiac charity that supports islanders affected by heart conditions has hired its first paid staff member in its 14-year history.

Jersey Heart Support Group announced that Mark Harris has been appointed as the charity’s Operations Manager.

In this newly-established role, he will focus on raising the charity’s profile, growing the group’s volunteer base, providing education on heart disease prevention, and increasing public understanding of defibrillator use.

Mr Harris has over 30 years of experience in the charity sector and a personal understanding of how heart illness affects lives.

“This is more than just a job for me, it’s personal,” he explained.

“I’m passionate about improving heart health, engaging more volunteers and ensuring that every islander knows about the vital work the Jersey Heart Support Group does.”

Jersey Heart Support Group secretary Anne Blackburn said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Mark to the team.

“His appointment marks a new chapter for the charity and we are deeply grateful to the Lloyds Banks Foundation for making this possible.”

Foundation Executive Director Johanna le Poidevin added: “We’re proud to support small, local charities like Jersey Heart Support Group.

“It’s a vital step forward going from being entirely volunteer-led to employing their first dedicated member of staff and will ensure that essential services can grow, strengthen and reach more people who need their help.”

The Jersey Heart Support Group is a local charity that supports islanders living with, recovering from, or at risk of heart conditions.

The organisation provides practical help, emotional support, community education, and access to life-saving defibrillators across Jersey.
