A grandmother’s dressing-up box and memories painted into Jersey’s coastline are among the inspirations behind two artists chosen as the first recipients of a new art scholarship.

The scholarships from Société Jersiaise come as the heritage organisation launches its new art section, which sits alongside its current offering ranging from archaeology to ornithology.

CEO Rebecca Bailhache said the scholarship awards were “a continuation of the Société’s longstanding support for the visual arts in Jersey”.

Société Jersiaise President Stuart Fell was on the judging panel for both awards and praised the recipients’ “creativity, cultural storytelling, and dedication to heritage and innovation”.

Phoebe Ashton-Barnett

Phoebe Ashton-Barnett, a sustainable fashion innovator, was chosen to receive the Barreau Art Scholarship.

The grant supports art students across disciplines, helping them pay for expenses such as equipment and materials.

The Edinburgh College of Art student said the scholarship would support her final-year collection, an exploration of her family history that takes inspiration from her late grandmother’s “infamous” dressing-up box.

She said: “My graduate collection will be an introspective exploration into family tradition, nostalgia and foolishness…

“The scholarship will allow me to realise my creative vision to the fullest extent and accomplish a highly rewarding final year of study.”

Cristabelle Jégard

Jersey-based painter Cristabelle Jégard takes memories and emotion and turns them into vivid island landscapes.

She was selected for the Averil Picot Award.

The award is aimed at students of fine art or similar disciplines.

It will help fund her Master’s studies at Camberwell College of Art in London.

She said she was “grateful and honoured” to receive the award.
