Jersey Telecoms customers have shared their confusion after experiencing an international ringtone when making local calls.

It comes after JT carried out planned mobile network maintenance in Jersey and Guernsey from 10:30pm on Tuesday 30 June until 5am on Wednesday 1 July.

The network company advised that this work may cause brief issues making calls, but confirmed that emergency calls should not be affected.

Some businesses, such as Evie and Jersey Village Vets, reported that their phone lines were down.

However, some Islanders experienced stranger issues. One commenter on social media expressed concern that they could “intermittently” hear the conversations of other people.

Others said that calls were failing due to the recipient being “engaged”, when they knew they were not.

Another commenter claimed that their phone calls seemed to have a mind of their own – diverting to other numbers independently, cutting out halfway through the call, and ringing twice before saying “call failed”.

In a statement yesterday, JT said that it was “aware” that “some customers may be experiencing an international ringtone” when making both local calls and calls to the UK.

“Our engineers are investigating this and working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” the statement added.

“We’d like to reassure customers that voice calls are connecting and working as normal, and you will not be charged international rates for these calls.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work on a fix.”

Express has requested an update from JT on the progress of this fix.
