Tonight we’ll have an answer.
It’s nomination night, the deadline for anyone who wants to stand.
The meeting takes place at 19:30 at the Town Hall. Candidates have to be nominated and seconded, and have their form signed by another eight people on the electoral role. But, the candidates don’t get the chance to make any speeches tonight – that’s saved for a later date.
Because the job up for grabs – Senator – is elected on an Island-wide basis those signing the form can come from any parish in the Island.
The post has fallen vacant because of the shock resignation of Senator Zoe Cameron. She quit in frustration saying it was impossible to get anything done, claiming she’d been cold-shouldered by the Council of Ministers.
So far nine candidates have said they’ll be seeking election: current States member Deputy Sam Mezec; former politicians Guy de Faye, Sarah Ferguson, Nick Le Cornu, and John Young; and newcomers Mike Dun, Christian May, Stevie Ocean, Mary O’Keeffe-Burgher.
The by-election is on Wednesday 7th September.
