Funding for a new 3G football pitch at Le Rocquier will not be confirmed until December at the earliest, it has emerged – despite a recent report revealing that the island has a “shortfall” of at least four full-size pitches.
Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan – who has responsibility for sport – spoke to Express after a Premier League-backed report outlined the need for more football facilities in the island to keep up with growing sporting demand.
The Local Football Facilities Plan for Jersey was published by Premier League funded charity Football Foundation.
Jersey FA CEO Tim Pryor said the island’s current 3G pitches are operating at near full capacity during peak times, and highlighted the need for “the right infrastructure”.
He also pointed to the fact that the Government confirmed Le Rocquier as its preferred location for developing a 3G pitch – but called for “some further clarity on where the funding is for this project”.
Constable Jehan agreed there is “definitely” a need for more 3G football pitches in the island.
He said: “We are working with both the [Jersey] FA and the Football Foundation,” citing the current resurfacing of the 3G pitch at Springfield Stadium as a “significant investment”.
“We are hoping that a new facility at Le Rocquier will be part of the next Government Plan,” the Minister continued.
“There’s definitely a need for something there and the idea is that it would have separate changing rooms and could be utilised out of hours.”
The Government Plan 2026 to 2029 is due to be published in December, and shows how taxpayers’ money is spent on delivering services, infrastructure and facilities.
The Minister described the recent Football Foundation report as “accurate”, but pointed out that there were “many successful football clubs” with access to land and funding.
“We are talking to a couple of clubs about the potential for them to do something,” he added.
Constable Jehan also noted a “fantastic” rise in the number of women and girls playing football, as well as the popularity of both junior football and walking football.
