Spotted by Sammi Last earlier today, the island’s Bomb Disposal Officer was rapidly called and the explosive device rapidly removed.

But members of the Force have stressed that “anything could have happened” with the surprise find had they not been informed.

“A timely reminder to please not touch any suspicious objects you find on the beach,” they wrote on Facebook, later adding: “If you do find anything like this then please get in touch with us immediately. Thanks.”

Sammi Last, who one islander said “deserve[s] a medal”, commented: “I’m glad I took it upon myself to inform the Police. Heaven knows how many people just walked past it.”

At the time of writing, the post has shocked nearly 500 islanders, with one commenting: “Flipping heck, imagine if a child had picked it up not realising what it was.”

Another added: “Oh my word. Glad nobody was hurt. That could’ve ended up horribly. Well done to everyone involved in getting rid of it.”
