La Mare has donated fifty bottles to Jersey Hospice Care, and hopes that the emergency hand gel will help other critical services and the wider community following a global shortage of sanitising products.

The 80% ethanol sanitiser is made at the St Mary distillery using a World Health Organisation-approved recipe.

Head of production, Tom Walker, said: “Working with high strength ethanol is part of our daily job when producing our popular Royal Gins and other spirits so we already have the equipment, skills and bottling processes to produce large volumes pretty quickly.”

The local business follows various companies who have turned production efforts towards helping fight coronavirus, including the Louis Vuitton conglomerate that switched from making perfume to hand sanitiser.

Managing director, Tim Crowley, said: “As a business, we are normally focused on tourism, weddings and events at this time of the year, so we obviously needed to diversify.

“With such shortages of high strength hand sanitiser, our team is really pleased to be putting their skills to use in such a positive way.”
