A Facebook post from States of Jersey Police highlighted the incident to commuters, but came too late to stop a build-up of traffic.
In response to the post, some parents expressed concern that the delays could affect students making their way to GCSE or A Level exams.
Some commuters reported that journeys to St Helier were taking 70 to 80 minutes – twice the normal time.
After the boat was removed by a crane, the road was reopened at around 08:00, although the delays to traffic persisted until the end of the rush hour.
The Parish of St Helier said the incident had meant it had not been possible to collect refuse as normal, with collections being rescheduled for tomorrow.
