The Youth Court heard yesterday that police monitoring traffic in Le Mont Millais on 13 April decided to stop the Yamaha moped due to the sound its exhaust was making.

They discovered that the teenage rider, who cannot be named due to his age, had no licence for the vehicle. He admitted the offence.

He explained that he had been repairing the moped for a friend who owned it and had taken it out for a test ride.

“I just wasn’t really thinking,” he said.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris commented that the defendant could not have done a good job of fixing the moped if its exhaust had been so noisy, but accepted the offence had been impulsive.

He told the teenager: “You are not a bad lad and I very much hope we are not going to see you back here.”

He imposed a fine of £150 and allowed him three months to pay
