A new collection of stamps featuring images from two local astronomy photographers has been launched to shine a spotlight on the island’s night sky.
Jersey Post has released its final stamp collection of the year, entitled ‘Jersey Sky at Night’, which features eight photographs captured by Neil Mahrer and Gordon Pollock.
The two astrophotographers – individuals who take photographs of celestial objects and events, such as stars, planets, galaxies and eclipses using specialised equipment and software – are both members of the Jersey Astronomy Club.
Founded in 1990, the club meets regularly to observe celestial events that can be seen from the island.
The final postal issue of the year includes a set of eight stamps and a souvenir miniature sheet.
Three stamps pair astronomical backdrops with well-known Jersey landmarks – including Grosnez Castle, the wicker puffins and Archirondel Tower – while the remaining five highlight natural space phenomena, including a lunar eclipse.
The ‘Jersey Sky at Night’ stamp issue is now on sale online and from Jersey Post’s Broad Street and Rue des Prés branches.
Islanders interested in exploring astronomy are also invited to connect with the Jersey Astronomy Club, which shares updates and members’ photography on Facebook and welcomes new attendees at club meetings.
